Learning Resources and Technology
(LRT) coordinates the evaluation of curriculum software, computer and
multimedia hardware and devices for authorized use in Nova Scotia
schools. Hundreds of educational software titles at various stages
of evaluation, and information technology which is appropriate
for use in schools is available for assessment to help Boards
and individual schools determine the best use of available funds
to support the implementation of the curriculum programs of Nova
Scotia.
Software Evaluation and Authorized Resources
Reviews of software completed by NS
consultants and teachers are available from the on-line NS Department
of Education LRT
Software Database.
Software titles which are authorized for use by schools are described
in the School
Book Bureau Online Database of the NS Department of
Education.
Evaluating Software & Hardware
We encourage teachers and groups of
teachers to spend time in the Demonstration Centre and Classroom at
Learning Resources and Technology (formerly Education Media Services).
We are conveniently located
in downtown Halifax, at Brunswick Place. The Centre is
open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Please call ahead
to check availability.
New programs are continually
being added to our collection. Our web pages describe programs
approved for use in Nova Scotia Schools and those at various
stages of review. Under each title, the formats listed after
"demo" are available at the Centre for review by
teachers.
However, individual titles may have been sent to classrooms for
evaluation. It is best to send, in advance, a list of specific
titles which you would like to evaluate during your visit.
Equipment in our Centre includes models up to recent Mac and Pentium PCs
and peripherals, mainly to support multimedia use and production.
The Demo Centre is also used for the evaluation of new systems being considered
for use in Nova Scotia schools.
Formal professional development
programs can be arranged in conjunction with school boards.
